Required documentation

During the signup process, you must provide the following documents to show you meet the Spark driver qualifications and prove your identity:

  • Valid state-issued driver’s license
  • Real-time selfie
  • Current auto insurance policy showing your name, vehicle details, and the expiration date

Vehicle requirements

To become a Spark driver, you must have access to a reliable, clean, and safe vehicle that isn’t a bike, motorcycle, or scooter. The eligible vehicle types for Walmart Spark include:

  • Cars
  • Station wagons
  • SUVs
  • Vans
  • Trucks

Note: There aren’t any vehicle make, model or year restrictions. If you decide to use a small vehicle, keep in mind this can limit your eligibility to deliver large items, such as furniture.

Car rental requirements

You can use any eligible vehicle that you’ve insured in your name, including one you’ve bought, leased, or borrowed. If you plan on renting a vehicle, Walmart Spark doesn’t mention restrictions or extra requirements. However, check that the car rental company allows business use and that your insurer will let you list the car on your personal auto insurance policy documents.

Be sure to track your Spark-related driving expenses so you can deduct your mileage. You can install a mileage tracker app to do this more easily and accurately.

Spark driver insurance requirements

The Walmart Spark driver insurance requirements include having at least your state’s required personal auto coverage. This typically means a bodily injury and property damage liability policy at the state-specific minimum limits, but you might also need medical payment coverage.

Verify whether you need a special rideshare policy or commercial coverage to work for Spark. You should also note that Walmart Spark doesn’t provide any supplemental auto insurance coverage, so getting a more comprehensive policy is wise to protect yourself financially.

Keep policy invoices and receipts since Spark insurance expenses may qualify as one of the many tax deductions for delivery drivers.

Spark driver background check requirements

Walmart Spark works with the third-party company Checkr to run a background check that looks at your criminal records and driving history. It requires your Social Security number and driver’s license information and usually takes one to seven days.

Some potential disqualifiers include major driving violations, past criminal convictions or a suspended license.

How to become a Spark driver

Once you’ve checked that you meet all of the requirements, follow these steps to sign up:

  1. Go to the Spark Driver website and click “Sign Up.”
  2. Enter your zip code to check your region’s availability and confirm any current waitlist.
  3. Review your chosen region’s requirements and select “Enroll Now.”
  4. Verify your cell phone number and email address.
  5. Continue setting up your Walmart Spark account online by providing personal details, signing documents, uploading insurance information, and choosing an earnings account.
  6. After setting up your account and getting off any waitlist, sign in to the Walmart Spark Driver app for Android or iPhone to sign final agreements and undergo an identity check.

FAQ

The median hourly pay for a Spark driver is $23, with earnings ranging from $19 to $27. When you sign up for Walmart Spark, factors such as the delivery type and distance, order size, incentives, and tips will affect your pay potential.
If you don’t meet the minimum Spark driver age requirement, have an eligible insured vehicle, or meet the other basic criteria, Walmart Spark won’t approve you. You’ll also be disqualified if you fail the background check due to previous dangerous driving incidents or serious criminal acts.
If all goes smoothly and your region has no waitlist, you can become a Spark driver in a few days to a week. It can take longer if there are issues completing the Spark driver background check requirements, and waitlists can push back your approval for several months.
